Cats

Cats aren't small dogs and we don't groom them like dogs. Sessions are short, the room is quiet and kept away from waiting dogs, restraint is kept to the minimum that is safe, and we skip the high-velocity dryer wherever we can. Depending on what your cat will allow, a groom might be a full brush-out and de-shed, nails, a sanitary and rear-end tidy, or a clip. Long-haired breeds — Persians, Maine Coons, Ragdolls — shed heavily and benefit from the same undercoat work we do for double-coated dogs.

Kittens

Kittens are welcome and the first visit is short. We keep it to a gentle handling session — a brush through, a look at the coat and skin, nails if they will sit for it — so the grooming table and being touched all over become ordinary rather than frightening. Nothing is forced, and if a kitten has had enough we stop there and build on it next time. Starting early is the single best thing you can do for a long-haired cat, because a kitten who accepts brushing rarely becomes a matted adult.

Matted long-haired cats

Matting is the most common reason a cat ends up with us. Once mats have formed against the skin they pull with every movement and can hide sores underneath, and no amount of brushing will get them out kindly. The right answer is almost always to clip: a full shave-down, a lion clip, or clipping only the affected areas such as the belly, breeches and behind the shoulders. It looks drastic for a fortnight and then grows back in far better condition, and your cat is immediately more comfortable.

Guinea pigs and rabbits

Small animals get nails, a full coat and skin check, a gentle brush-out and trimming for long-haired breeds like Peruvians and Shelties. We also check the rear end for soiling, which matters a great deal in warm weather. Guinea pigs start from £25. Handling is brief and calm and we keep them in their own carrier between stages.

How long, how often and what affects the price

Cats are usually with us thirty to ninety minutes, guinea pigs and rabbits often less than thirty. Kittens can start as soon as they are settled at home; long-haired cats do best every six to twelve weeks, long-haired small animals every four to six. Price depends on species, coat length and condition, how much matting there is and how much handling your pet tolerates.
