The quick version

Nail clipping is the fastest thing we do and one of the most important. We check each paw, find the quick — the live tissue inside the nail — and clip just in front of it, then file the edge smooth so nothing snags. Every nail gets done, including the dew claws higher up the leg. While we have the paw in hand we also check the pads for cracks, grass seeds or matted fur between the toes and tell you what we find.

Why length matters

Overlong nails change how a dog stands. Instead of weight resting on the pads, the nail hits the ground first and pushes the toes back, which loads the wrists and shoulders and over time causes real discomfort, particularly in older dogs. Long nails also split, catch in carpet and bedding, and in the worst cases curl round into the pad. If you can hear clicking on laminate, they are due.

How often, and nervous pets

Every four to eight weeks suits most pets. Dogs walked mainly on grass need it more often than dogs walked on pavement, which wears the fronts down naturally. For nervous pets we go paw by paw with breaks between, and we are happy to split it across two short visits. Nails are included as standard in a full groom, and are easy to add to a de-shedding treatment while your dog is already with us.

What affects the price

Size, how much handling your pet needs, and coat: heavily furred feet sometimes need a tidy before the nail is even visible. Cats and small animals are also welcome — nervous cats are usually quickest done as a two-person job, which we plan for when you ring.
