What a puppy groom involves

A puppy groom is an introduction, not a full style. The aim of the first visit is that your puppy leaves happy, because everything that follows for the rest of their life depends on it. We keep the room quiet, let them have a sniff around, then lift them onto the table and spend time simply handling them: paws held and toes separated, ears looked into, lips lifted, tail and belly touched. We run the clippers near them so they hear and feel the vibration without anything being cut.

Then a warm bath with a gentle, neutral shampoo, a low-noise dry, a soft brush-out, and a light tidy — eyes, feet and sanitary area — plus nails trimmed if they will allow it. Plenty of praise, lots of pauses, and we stop before they have had enough rather than after.

When to start

Come in once your puppy is fully covered by their second vaccination, usually around twelve weeks. Bring the vaccination card with you. Earlier is better than later: owners who wait until the coat is long enough to "need" doing often end up with a six-month-old who has never been handled and now has to sit through a two-hour groom. Little and often is the whole trick.

How long it takes and how often

First sessions usually run thirty to sixty minutes. We recommend coming back every four to six weeks through the first year, adding a bit more each time, until your puppy is comfortable with a full groom. If your puppy is nervous about their feet in particular, a standalone nail clip between grooms is a quick and useful confidence exercise.

What affects the price

Puppy sessions are priced on time and on how much we manage to do, so a short introduction costs less than a first proper trim. Coat type matters as the coat comes through — a Cockapoo's adult coat needs more work than a smooth-coated pup — and double-coated breeds should never be clipped, so we would talk to you about de-shedding instead as they mature.
